element14 Community has launched a new design challenge dedicated to smart homes and healthcare, inviting engineers, makers, and technology enthusiasts to design and build innovative prototypes focused on improving everyday environments and personal well-being.
Challenge goal
The challenge encourages participants to create a smart home or healthcare system prototype designed to promote the well-being and happiness of an individual or a household. Projects can address physical or mental health needs, or introduce smart solutions that simplify daily life at home.
Kit and documentation
Five selected participants will receive a free kit of components to support the design and construction of their prototype. Participants will need to document the development process through blog posts and share their final results on the element14 Community platform. Projects will be evaluated on creativity, technical execution, and innovative use of the provided components.
Statement
“Smart home and healthcare technologies have the potential to transform the way we live and care for each other,” said Andreea Teodorescu, Global Director of Product Marketing at element14 Community. “This challenge encourages our global community to apply their creativity and engineering expertise to develop practical solutions that improve well-being, independence, and quality of life.”
Project examples
Examples of project concepts for smart home and healthcare systems include open source health monitoring systems, athletic performance tracking tools, safety and wellness solutions for the elderly, automated medication management devices, therapeutic platforms supporting mental health, and interactive monitoring or support tools for children.
Prizes
The first-place winner will receive a prize package that includes a Google Pixel Watch and a Philips Hue outdoor camera. The second-place winner will receive a Google Pixel Watch and a blood pressure monitor, while third place will receive a blood pressure monitor. All participants who successfully complete the challenge will also receive a fingertip pulse oximeter.
Deadlines and registration
Registrations are open until August 16. Selected participants will have until October 18 to complete and submit their projects. For more information and to register, visit: https://community.element14.com/challenges-projects/design-challenges/smart-home-healthcare-challenge.
My previous attempt at a similar project failed because the integration process was significantly more complex than anticipated. I found that software compatibility often proves to be the biggest hurdle for these types of devices.
